A Guide by I Artist Adventure

We’re often asked, “When is the best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro?”

The good news? Kilimanjaro is a year-round trekking destination! While there are slight seasonal differences, most months offer great conditions to hike the tallest freestanding mountain in the world.

But First—When Is the Worst Time to Climb?
If you're looking to avoid muddy trails, cold rain, and soggy campsites, steer clear of April through May and mid-November to mid-December. These are the primary rainy seasons in Tanzania, and conditions on Kilimanjaro can become uncomfortable for trekking.

That leaves nine excellent months to choose from! Don't Stress About the Weather Too Much
Whether you climb in January or September, one thing stays the same: Kilimanjaro’s weather is unpredictable and diverse. The base of the mountain is typically warm, while the summit is always freezing—no matter the month. The temperature swing between seasons is relatively minor (around 10–15°F), so your focus should be more on preparation than prediction.

Here’s a snapshot of Kilimanjaro’s two main trekking seasons:

Green Season (December–March):

  • Slightly warmer

  • Generally clear mornings

  • Possible quick rain or snow showers in the afternoons

Dry Season (June–October):

  • Slightly cooler

  • Clear skies most days

  • Minimal precipitation

But remember: Kilimanjaro creates its own weather. Snow in the dry season or clear skies in the green season—it’s all possible. Always be ready for sunshine, wind, rain, and snow, all in one trek.

So, How Should You Choose When to Trek?
A great strategy is to plan your Kilimanjaro climb around the rest of your dream Tanzanian adventure.

Want to go on a safari? June to October is ideal for spotting wildlife in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, when the Great Migration is often visible.

Thinking of relaxing on a white-sand beach in Zanzibar? The island is stunning year-round. Some travelers prefer the warm December sun, while others like the breezy calm of Tanzania’s cooler months from June to August.

Final Word: Kilimanjaro Is Always Worth It
The truth is, Kilimanjaro is Kilimanjaro—breathtaking, wild, and unforgettable in every season. So whether you’re trekking in January, July, or October, the magic of the mountain will meet you there.

At I Artist Adventure, we’ll help you plan the perfect trek, at the perfect time for you.
