Serengeti – When and Where to Go
The Serengeti is renowned for the Great Wildebeest Migration, the largest mammal migration in the world. It is also one of the few places in Africa where game viewing is spectacular year-round. Predator numbers are high, and the Big Five is present as well. The Serengeti is a massive park that spans around 30,000 km² (12,000 sq miles). To get the most out of your visit, it is important to plan your safari well. Where you should go in the Serengeti depends largely on what time (season) you choose to visit this beautiful park.
Central Serengeti (Seronera Region)
This area is rich in wildlife throughout the year because of its many river valleys. You can see an abundance of lions, leopards, elephants, and more. The Wildebeest Migration moves to this part of the Serengeti from April to June and returns in October, November, and December.
If witnessing the Great Migration is the main reason for your visit, it’s important to be in the central region during these times. Our I Artist Adventure travel consultants can provide exact timings and recommend the best accommodations. Since there is so much to see in this region, we recommend staying here for at least one or two days.
Southern Serengeti (Ndutu Area)
From December to March, these nutrient-rich plains become home to the Great Wildebeest Migration during the green season. February is especially magical, as half a million calves are born on these southern plains. You will witness hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebras, along with predators waiting for the placentas left behind. Interestingly, because of these placentas, young calves are relatively safe from predators.
The calving season is an unforgettable experience. We advise spending at least 2 days in the Ndutu Area during this period. Alternatively, you can spend one day in South Serengeti, as it is common to enter the park from the south, but keep in mind that your schedule will be tight.
Northern Serengeti (Kogatende Area)
The northern Serengeti is the place to be from July to October, when the migration reaches this region. Here, the herds gather around the Mara River, where you can witness the epic river crossings. This is one of the most dramatic sights of the migration, as fast-flowing water and crocodiles make this crossing extremely dangerous.
The northern Serengeti is beautifully remote and quiet, as it is about a 4-hour drive from the central region. If you visit this area, you will need accommodation here. We recommend staying for at least 2 days to increase your chances of witnessing a river crossing and to fully enjoy encounters with other wildlife.
