[Infographic]: What to Pack for a Walking Safari in Tanzania
If you’re an experienced or regular hiker, you’ll probably have most of the gear you need for a walking safari in Tanzania. But whether you’re a seasoned trekker or a first-time explorer, use our handy checklist to ensure you don’t leave anything behind—because once you're deep in the African wilderness, there won’t be any outdoor stores to stop by for last-minute supplies!
CLOTHES
Pack Light, Pack Smart Since many walking safari destinations in Tanzania, such as Serengeti National Park, Selous Game Reserve, and Ruaha National Park, are accessed by light aircraft, luggage-weight limits are strict. At I Artist Adventure, we recommend carrying only what you need for the trek, while we arrange storage for your extra bags if you’re continuing your journey elsewhere. Blend in with Nature Bright or neon-colored gear might be your go-to back home, but in the African bush, it’s best to stick to earthy tones—greens, browns, and greys—to avoid startling wildlife. Avoid white (it gets dirty quickly), as well as black and blue, which tend to attract insects like tsetse flies. Camouflage is illegal in many African countries, including Tanzania, as it is reserved for military use. Convertible Clothing for Versatility Zip-off trousers that convert into shorts are ideal, allowing you to adapt to Tanzania’s varying temperatures throughout the day.GEAR
Trekking Poles for Stability Walking safaris often traverse rugged terrain, from rocky paths to open plains. If you use trekking poles, practice with them beforehand to find your rhythm and preferred length. Essential Lighting A headlamp is crucial for moving around camp after dark. Pack fresh batteries but insert them only when needed—accidental activation during flights could drain them before you arrive. Photography without the Bulk If you're not a professional wildlife photographer, opt for lightweight camera gear. Carrying heavy lenses for hours in the Serengeti or Tarangire heat can become exhausting. Quick-Dry Towel A microfibre towel is a must—lightweight, compact, and dries quickly after a refreshing wash in the wild. High-Quality Sunglasses The African sun is intense, especially in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and other open plains. Bring UV-protective sunglasses to safeguard your eyes. Boots & Gaiters for Comfort Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are essential, especially during green season when river crossings are frequent. Gaiters keep sand, pebbles, and mud out of your boots—an underrated but invaluable addition to your gear.TOILETRIES
Sunscreen is Non-Negotiable Tanzania’s sun can be harsh, so bring a lightweight, fragrance-free, and eco-friendly sunscreen to protect your skin. Eco-Friendly Insect Repellent Wildlife has an incredibly keen sense of smell, so opt for an organic insect repellent with minimal scent to avoid scaring off animals. Minimalist, Biodegradable Toiletries Choose biodegradable toiletries and keep grooming products to a minimum. A walking safari is about immersing yourself in nature, embracing simplicity, and experiencing Africa just as our ancestors did.Experience the Wild on Foot
