Paje on the southeast coast is one of the world's great kite spots — flat shallow lagoon, steady wind, and schools for every level.
Paje, on Zanzibar’s southeast coast, is a kitesurfing mecca: a wide, flat, shallow lagoon protected by a reef, with reliable cross-shore trade winds during the two windy seasons. It’s ideal for learning — you can stand in waist-deep water across most of the lagoon — and great fun for experienced riders.
IKO-certified schools line the beach, offering everything from taster sessions to full certification courses and equipment hire for those already riding. The village buzzes with a friendly international kite crowd.
Theory, kite setup, and safety before the water.
Practise control in waist-deep water.
Get up on the board and ride the lagoon.
Progress with an instructor or ride freely if qualified.
One of the best places on the planet to learn — the shallow lagoon makes it far less daunting than open water. Wind is seasonal, though, so timing matters: the two windy seasons are roughly June–September and December–February. Outside those, it can be flat. Choose an IKO-certified school.
