A gentle guided walk to the rim of the grassy Olmoti crater and its waterfall — easy highland scenery and Maasai grazing country.
Olmoti is the gentlest of the Ngorongoro highland craters — a shallow, grassy caldera near the Maasai village of Nainokanoka, grazed by cattle and home to eland, bushbuck, and buffalo. A short guided walk climbs to the rim, where the Munge River spills over the edge as a slender waterfall before flowing down toward the main Ngorongoro Crater.
The walk is easy and the scenery quietly beautiful: rolling green highlands, big skies, and Maasai herders moving their cattle as they have for generations. It’s an ideal leg-stretch and cultural taster between the bigger highland experiences, and a peaceful contrast to the wildlife-packed crater floor.
Transfer to the Maasai village at the crater's foot.
An easy guided climb to the Olmoti crater rim.
Walk to where the Munge River spills over the edge.
Descend through grazing country with big Rift views.
Olmoti is the easy one — a gentle, scenic walk rather than a workout, ideal for travellers who want a taste of the highlands on foot without the effort of Empakaai or Lengai. It's as much about the Maasai grazing landscape as the crater itself. Best combined with Empakaai for a full highland day.
