Hike into a deep, forest-walled crater cradling a flamingo-pink soda lake — a quiet, spectacular alternative to the main Ngorongoro caldera.
Empakaai is the Ngorongoro highlands’ secret: a steep-walled crater in the northeast of the conservation area, its 300-metre forested cliffs cradling a deep soda lake often rimmed pink with flamingos. Where the main Ngorongoro Crater is explored by vehicle, Empakaai is best on foot — a guided hike down through montane forest to the lakeshore and back.
The descent winds through forest alive with birds and buffalo sign, opening onto the still, reflective lake far below. On clear days the rim gives views to Ol Doinyo Lengai and even Kilimanjaro. It’s a refreshing change of pace — quiet, active, and a world away from the vehicle-bound crater circuit.
A scenic 4x4 transfer to the Empakaai crater rim.
Hike down through montane forest to the lakeshore.
Time by the still soda lake before the climb back.
Back at the rim for far-reaching Rift Valley views.
Empakaai is for travellers who want to stretch their legs and escape the crater-floor traffic — the hike is moderate but the climb back out is a steady uphill effort. It pairs beautifully with Olmoti and a Lake Natron extension for an active, off-the-beaten-track few days in the highlands.
