A focused push to Socialist Peak (4,566 m) and its dramatic crater-rim sunrise — Meru's summit as a goal in its own right.
For trekkers who want Meru’s summit as the objective — not just as Kilimanjaro prep — this expedition focuses on the climb to Socialist Peak (4,566 m) and the exhilarating crater-rim traverse that gets you there. It’s a serious, rewarding summit: a 1am start, a long ridge walk above a 1,500-metre drop, and sunrise over the ash cone with Kilimanjaro glowing across the saddle.
The route is the Momella trail, sleeping in mountain huts, with an armed ranger leading through the wildlife-rich lower slopes. It packs the drama of a far bigger mountain into a few days.
Through wildlife country to the first hut.
Climb to 3,570 m; Little Meru for acclimatisation.
1am ridge walk to Socialist Peak for sunrise.
Long descent back through the park.
The summit and its rim walk are the draw here — genuinely thrilling, and a real mountaineering feel without technical climbing. The exposure on the rim is significant; if heights worry you, consider the wildlife-focused Meru trek instead. Fitness matters for the steep summit night.
