Tanzania's beautiful second summit (4,566 m) — a 3–4 day trek through a wildlife-rich park with a thrilling crater-rim walk and Kilimanjaro views.
Mount Meru, at 4,566 metres, is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and one of its most beautiful climbs — a collapsed volcanic cone inside Arusha National Park whose knife-edge crater-rim walk at dawn, with Kilimanjaro floating on the horizon, rivals anything on its taller neighbour.
The trek starts as a walking safari: giraffe, buffalo, and colobus monkeys line the lower trail, with an armed ranger accompanying every group. You sleep in mountain huts and summit on a 1am start to catch the sunrise. Most take 4 days; 3 is possible for the very fit.
Grassland and forest with wildlife to the first hut (2,514 m).
Steep forest to Saddle Hut (3,570 m); optional Little Meru.
1am start along the crater rim to Socialist Peak, then down.
An easy walk out with buffalo and giraffe.
Beautiful and underrated, and the smartest acclimatisation you can do before Kilimanjaro — climbers who do Meru first report far easier Kili summit nights. The crater-rim walk is exhilarating but exposed; those uneasy with heights should know that in advance. Take 4 days unless you're fit and altitude-experienced.
