Arrival in Tanzania
As soon as Judith and Stephanie stepped off the plane at Kilimanjaro International Airport, they were greeted by a scent unlike any other. “It smells like Africa… like earth,” Stephanie whispered, breathing in the moment. Their adventure officially began. That night, they settled in at Ndarakwai Ranch, an expansive 11,000-acre sanctuary. Here, they enjoyed glamping at its finest, complete with stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s foothills. “We are glamping right now,” Judith laughed. “Total glamping,” Stephanie agreed.Day 1: Ndarakwai Ranch – Trailhead – Shira 1 Camp (11,499′)
The trek began at the trailhead with one important phrase: pole, pole—Swahili for “slowly, slowly.” “Our guide, MC, says that it’s the key to getting up there safely,” Judith shared. With the help of their team of 70 dedicated porters, the journey was off to a warm and supportive start.Day 2: Moir Camp (13,700′)
Judith and Stephanie enjoyed ginger tea, fresh-baked banana bread, and a sky full of stars at camp. “It’s amazing what they can prepare on little propane stoves,” Judith marveled.Day 3: Pofu Camp (13,200′)
They crossed the dramatic landscape of the Alpine Desert, navigating the shifting altitude with determination.Day 4: Rongai Caves 2 Camp (11,450′)
A shorter, gentler day gave them a chance to acclimatize and rest.Day 5: Kikelewa Caves Camp (11,850′)
Tired but elated, Judith and Stephanie found themselves literally walking among the clouds. “We’re pretty much equal to the clouds,” Judith said, beaming. They celebrated the kindness and humor of their guides and porters, calling them “the sweetest, most beautiful, funniest, happiest, and hardest-working people ever.”Day 6: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (14,210′)
The climb got steeper and tougher, with loose rocks and shifting trails. “Pole, pole, big time,” Stephanie said, but the challenge was worth it—especially when they were rewarded with a rainbow shimmering through the clouds.Day 7: Outward Bound Camp (15,450′)
At 15,000 feet, the altitude made its presence felt. But with encouragement from their guides and each other, Judith kept going. “These guys have been so supportive today, it almost made me cry,” she said. “Actually, it did make me cry.”Day 8: Summit Day! Uhuru Peak (19,341′)
Finally, after days of climbing and countless memories, Judith and Stephanie reached Uhuru Peak—the Roof of Africa. Did they make it? Absolutely!Day 9: Mweka Millennium Camp (12,500′)
The descent began. Judith and Stephanie were tired but filled with pride and exhilaration. “It was so exhilarating to be there,” Judith said. “We were so well prepared. We’re so proud of ourselves. And exhausted!”Day 10: Mweka Gate (5,380′)
With trek certificates in hand and hearts full of stories, Judith and Stephanie completed their adventure. “Bon voyage—and congratulations on your summit!” Want to experience this life-changing journey for yourself?
