Climbing Mount Meru is an exhilarating and rewarding adventure. As Tanzania’s second-highest peak, Mt Meru is a fantastic standalone trek and an excellent acclimatization climb for those preparing to take on Africa’s tallest mountain, Mt Kilimanjaro. These two iconic peaks stand just 70km (43mi) apart, offering breathtaking views of each other during the ascent. At I Artist Adventure, we specialize in immersive and authentic safari and trekking experiences, ensuring your Mt Meru climb is not just a hike, but a journey into Tanzania’s incredible landscapes and wildlife.

Why Climb Mount Meru?

A Mt Meru climb is one of the most spectacular trekking experiences in East Africa. Unlike Kilimanjaro’s popular routes, Meru offers a quieter and more intimate connection with nature. During the trek, you will traverse several unique vegetation zones, each with its own wildlife. The forested slopes are home to buffalo, giraffe, zebra, bushbuck, colobus monkeys, and even the elusive leopard. The birdlife is outstanding, with over 400 species recorded in the region.

How High Is Mt Meru?

At 4,562m (14,967ft), Mt Meru ranks as the fifth-highest peak in Africa. While altitude sickness is less of a concern than on Kilimanjaro, the experience of trekking at this elevation will help prepare your body for a higher-altitude adventure.

How Hard Is It to Climb Mt Meru?

Don’t underestimate Mt Meru’s challenging terrain. With steep sections and technical scrambles, a reasonable level of fitness is required. The only route up the mountain is the Momella Route, which winds up the crater’s northern side to the summit, Socialist Peak.

How Long Does It Take to Climb Mt Meru?

The standard climb takes four days (three nights), though a shorter three-day (two-night) itinerary is possible. However, we recommend the four-day trek to allow for better acclimatization and a more enjoyable experience.
